An Elon Musk-led investment firm has offered $97.4 billion to buy the popular AI company OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT.
Altman and Musk founded OpenAI together in 2015, but their relationship has deteriorated since Musk left the company in 2018. Altman is currently turning OpenAI into a profitable company, which Musk alleged is changing the company’s core principles.
According to him, OpenAI has deviated from the promise it started with to use artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
The $97.4 billion offer is lower than OpenAI’s current market value. The company was valued at $157 billion in October 2023, and OpenAI’s valuation is expected to reach $300 billion in the latest investment talks.
In response to the proposal, however, Altman sarcastically wrote on X, the social media platform owned by Musk,
‘No thanks.
But if you want, we can buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.’
